Even though many people would consider the V303 a toy, especially since the word toy is in its name, we like to refer to this drone as the poor man’s DJI Phantom. If you’re on a budget, you can still get many great features with the V303.
Most budget quadcopters usually are missing two key components; barometer and GPS. Those are two critical components if you want your drone to be able to hover safely while you set down the controller. It’s also critical if you want to have the ability to capture higher-quality aerial footage, because you’ll get a more stable flight. The included controller is the well-known ZeroUAV YS-S4, which includes the convenient return-to-home function. The V303 features both of the above-mentioned features, and to us, it looks like a copycat version of the popular DJI Phantom. The V303 features a white body, white transmitter, and white propellers. However, one thing that does separate this drone from the Phantom is the landing skids; they make it look similar to a lunar lander.
There are a few different models of the V303 and we tested the version that includes a GoPro mount. The other models come equipped with cameras, gimbals, and more. The mount is a basic design, which will support a GoPro Hero 4 or Hero 3, but please be aware that it will not support GoPro clones such as the Keecoo Wi-Fi sports camera.
There is little assembly needed before your first flight. You’ll only find yourself having to install the props and tighten them down the nuts using the included tools. There are no extra nuts included, so you may want to consider ordering spares just in case you happen to lose any. We also suggest that you think about buying spare legs as well because we found that they aren’t very strong.
The V303 we tested was a later model, which was shipped with the newest firmware and a wire that protrudes out of the underside of the aircraft. This is there to allow for easy connection of a camera gimbal. It’s worth mentioning that the Walkera G-2D two-axis gimbal will bolt directly on to the V303. Then, you can easily connect a Keecoo action camera. This combination will actually give you comparable quality video to a Phantom 2 with a Zenmuse gimbal and GoPro, but for a lot less money.
One thing you won’t be able to do with the V303 compared to the Phantom 2 Vision+ is view a live feed from the on-board camera, or start and stop recording remotely. However, at this price, it may be a limitation most people can live with.
Flying the aircraft is almost exactly the same as the Phantom. Pulling sticks downward and outward will start the motors. Whereas on the Phantom, you pull them inwards. Applying some throttle will cause the drone to take-off. Red and blue LEDs under the arms make it easy to see the aircraft in the air, and a flashing status light lets you know when a GPS lock has occurred. Before our first flight, it did take a couple of minutes to locate the satellites.
This drone is very stable in the air, even with light wind conditions. It’s also pretty fast and agile as well. The status light will also change to a yellow color if you start being too aggressive with the controls. We got just about 15 minutes of flight time with the 2700mAh battery. During out tests, we found that it took almost two hours to fully charge a depleted battery with the included charger. Therefore, we would suggest that you invest in a few spare batteries.
The WLtoys V303 is definitely a great choice for people who don’t want to spend the money to buy a Phantom. When adding a gimbal and camera, the V303 comes out to be about one third of the price. It’s also fairly easy to find spare parts, which makes this drone a great choice for those on a budget.
